Just as Liverpool thought they could go on to win it now they were given a huge blow just a couple of minutes later. When Gravenberch lost the ball right in front of the Newcatsle penalty area, it led to a brilliant counter attack from Newcastle with Wissa shrugging off Szoboszlai and some Liverpool midfielders before playing it short on the left for Joe Willock who had just gone on who took a couple of touches to steady himself before lacing a curling shot beyond the reach of Allison and into the bottom far corner. 2-1! The Magpies must’ve been kicking their heads with their attackers when Lewis Hall placed a low driven cross across the six yard box that nobody could capitalise on. The 24/25 Premier League Champions were handed a lifeline when debutant Viktor Munoz was bundled over by the clumsy Lewis Hall. The Referee swiftly pointed to the spot. Dominik Szoboszlai stepped up and hammered the ball right into the roof of the top left corner to save the opening day for Liverpool. 2-2! That deemed to be the last kick of an enthralling game to end the weekend

Liverpool ended the game with 60.8% of the ball beating Newcastle’s 39.2%. The Man of the Match Award went to Joanne Wissa with a 7.65 rating after his superior attacking performance for Newcastle. What next? Newcastle face West Bromwich Albion in the Carabao Cup for a place in the 3rd round, while Liverpool face Nottingham Forest in an early kick off next Saturday in the Premier League.
